We’ve seen another fake HP41C that we think is using the same emulation software but required SMD soldering.

Still, what a great calculator and it is fun to see it reborn in modern form. Also, as great as the HP41C was, it didn’t have binary or hex or even octal math unless you used “synthetic programming” and though we imagine the emulators used can handle synthetic programming (sort of assembly language for the HP41C) it was never fun to work on non-decimal problems with this machine. For everyone else, it is usually a bit of a learning curve. Of course, HP calculators used RPN, but if you grew up with a slide rule that’s fine. Then again, the schematics are there so maybe someone will lay out a nice HP41-specific board. We were a little sad that the kit is in an HP15-C like landscape orientation unlike the HP41’s portrait format. What we really liked, though, was the 3D printed cases you can download for the calculators. The display is also backlit, something we all wanted in the original. The machine also has over double the memory the original calculator had along with a real-time clock built-in. As you might expect, this version uses a through-hole ATMEGA328 and even at 8 MHz, the emulation is faster than the original calculator. You can see the device in action in the video below. In fact, the HP emulator will also act like an HP15C or 16C, if you prefer. Didn’t have one? Don’t worry, you can now build your own. It really was a little hand-held computer. If you’ve ever had one, you know that is a marvel of the day’s technology with alphanumeric capabilities and four plug in ports for more memory or ROMs. The HP41C was probably the pinnacle of that trend. But there was that awkward time when calculators were very important and computers were very expensive that calculators tried to be what we needed from full-blown computers.

If you really need serious number crunching, you’ll turn to a full computer. Sure, calculators are still around, but you are more likely to use your phone. Then there was a time when we all carried calculators. I installed it mostly because it is very small (does not even requires a ROM), so I have something with RPN in case I deinstall the others for space reasons or whatever.There was a time when engineers carried slide rules. (Not really an emulator, but anyway.) Today I also found Free42 ( ), which is not an emulator, but a reimplementation of the HP-42S. m48 has a bigger brother which is m48+ ( ), costing $10.99, so I didn't try it, which has a bigger list of features, including saving and loading files/libraries (which m48 doesn't), emulation also of the HP49 and HP49+, and even seems to be able to run the famed Metakernel when emulating the HP48GX.

In this skin the buttons are drawn (not a picture) and very clear. The recommended skin has a simple mode (bigger buttons, basic operations) and a full mode. M48 is very good (based on Emu48), also emulates the HP48GX, and it supports skins (possibly same as Emu48, can't tell). Can't save/load files from its interface. Apart from the display, the interface is merely a picture of an HP48GX, a bit blurred etc. I48, based on x48 (like Droid48), is small and a bit limited. On iOS, I've briefly used (and am also new to the HP 50G itself) i48 ( ) and m48 ( ). I haven't used it much but it is by the same author as HC-16C. I tested it using my 'Approximate e (2.718.) to 400 decimal places' HP-16C program and it worked great.

It allows reading whole-calculator backups or individual objects on your Android device, with a better and deeper (more information) interface than the actual calculator. I haven't installed this one, but it led to Droid48sx. It won't beep, but does everything else I've tried the same as my real HP-48SX. My favorite, based on Droid48 (below) but with simulated memory expansion cards. I'd be interested in other Android/iOS *emulators* that you have actually used and endorse as being worth looking at. These are *emulators* that run the actual calculator ROM code to agree exactly with the real calculator, not *simulators* that look like HP calculators but use math libraries that might give different answers than the real calculator.
